The World Boxing Council Light Heavyweight Champion, David “Monster” Benavidez, successfully retained his crowns by defeating English contender Anthony Yarde by knockout in the seventh round, this Saturday, at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Benavidez dominated Yarde, overwhelming him from the moment the bell rang in the first round until the seventh, when he sent him to the canvas.
Yarde managed to get up, but upon receiving further punishment, Panamanian Referee Héctor Afú stepped in to save him.
Benavidez was clearly superior to Yarde, who failed in his third world title attempt. In August 2019, he was defeated by the Russian Sergey Kovalev, just as he was in January 2023 against the also Russian Artur Beterbiev.
Benavidez improved his record to 31-0, with 25 knockouts and announced that next May he will face Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in the cruiserweight division. Yarde, for his part, saw his record fall to 27-4, with 24 knockouts.
