In the preliminary bouts of the card headlined by Rafael “Divino” Espinoza in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Hidalgo’s own Christian “Pelón” Islas captured the WBC Youth super featherweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Colombia’s Christian Villanueva.
The judges scored the bout 77–73 and 76–74 (twice)
Christian Islas said: “First, I want to thank you, as I did once before, for allowing me to keep my promises to you, Mr. Mauricio Sulaiman. I promised that I would push myself, that I would work for my dreams. I pledged loyalty to the WBC because it was the organization that believed in me.
This was a very difficult training camp, but every effort, every tear, and every drop of blood was worth it.”
Mauricio Sulaiman personally presented Islas with the WBC Youth world championship belt.
Mauricio Sulaiman said: “You have no idea how beautiful this moment feels. Every Tuesday, so many young people with dreams walk through these doors, and today you’ve achieved the first of many. You are a great representative of Mexican boxing. I wish you much success.”
