During the WBC Annual Convention in Bangkok, it was officially announced that Venezuelan veteran Carlos “CCC” Cañizales (28-3-1, 20 KOs) will defend his WBC Light Flyweight World Title against Thailand’s Thammanoon “Knockout CP Freshmart” Niyomtrong (28-1-0, 11 KOs).
This bout marks a key title defense for Cañizales, who captured the prestigious Green and Gold Belt on August 1 in Caracas with a spectacular fifth-round technical knockout over Panya Pradabsri, the defending champion at the time, in a dramatic rematch.
Pradabsri had dropped the Venezuelan in the fourth round, but Cañizales responded with a devastating body shot that ended the fight and crowned him as the new WBC world champion
Scheduled as one of the main events of the Convention, the fight represents a new chapter in the rivalry between two of the world’s top light flyweights.
Cañizales, now defending his reign, stated that he signed the contract motivated by his trust in the WBC. Niyomtrong, a seasoned former world champion, enters as a dangerous and experienced challenger.
The bout stands out as one of the most anticipated matchups of the year in the light flyweight division.
The Convention held at the prestigious Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park in Bangkok, will be historic as, for the first time, the WBC will integrate its Muay Thai division into the event, bringing both combat worlds together under one roof.
The fifth edition’s agenda includes forums, networking sessions, an awards ceremony, and a gala dinner. Attendees will hear first-hand from athletes, who will take part in discussions on the future of boxing and the sport’s safety standards.
