The World Boxing Council (WBC) designed a commemorative belt to honor the Super Bowl XX champion team, the 1985 Chicago Bears, who are considered “The Greatest Team in Football History” as we pause to commemorate the 40th anniversary of that historic victory.
This magnificent belt was presented during the first game of the season at Chicago’s legendary “Soldier Field” stadium, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The captains of the ’85 team, Mike Singletary, Willie Gault and Richard Dent, were in charge of receiving this unique piece from the WBC on behalf of the entire team.
The night before the inaugural game, the players and coaching staff of the ’85 championship team were able to admire the commemorative belt and received a very special commemorative coin from the WBC, which was given to each attendee on behalf of Mauricio Sulaimán, President of the WBC.
About the 1985 Chicago Bears:
The Greatest Team in Football History: The 1985 Chicago Bears are often called “The Greatest Team in Football History” for their victory in Super Bowl XX. They are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their triumph.
Near-Perfect Regular Season: The Bears finished the regular season with an impressive 15-1 record. Their only loss was against the Miami Dolphins.
The “Super Bowl Shuffle”: Before their Super Bowl victory, many of the players recorded a music video and song called “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” which became a cultural phenomenon.
Playoff Shutouts: The Bears’ defense was so dominant that they shut out both the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC playoffs, outscoring them 45-0 combined. They were the first team in NFL history to record back-to-back playoff shutouts.
Super Bowl XX Victory: The Bears crushed the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX to secure their first NFL championship since 1963.
Super Bowl Records: During their Super Bowl win, the Bears set or tied several records, including the largest margin of victory (36 points) and most sacks (7).
Hall of Fame Talent: The team featured multiple Hall of Fame players, including running back Walter Payton and defensive players Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Willie Gault, and Mike Singletary.
The “Fridge”: Rookie defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry became a fan favorite. Known for his massive size, he also lined up as a running back in goal-line situations and famously scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl MVP: Defensive end Richard Dent, a key player in the “46” defense, was named the Super Bowl XX MVP after a stellar performance that included 1.5 sacks.
Walter Payton’s Legacy: Despite not scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl, running back Walter “Sweetness” Payton had an incredible season. At the time, he was the NFL’s all-time leading rusher and was a central part of the team’s identity.
