BlockBuster Actress Sydney Sweeney stars in “Christy,” the biographical film about the legendary boxing champion Christy Martin, who is considered the most influential female boxer of the 1990s in the United States and the world. The “ Coal Miner daughter “ fought under Don King and climbed into the ring as co feature with champions like Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez.
The film, directed by David Michôd and written by Katherine Fugate, Mirrah Foulkes, and Michôd himself, chronicles Martin’s life: her rise from a small town in West Virginia to becoming a media sensation in women’s boxing, as well as the darkest episode of her life when she survived an assassination attempt by Jim Martin her then-husband and trainer in 2010.
“Christy” had its world premiere on September 5 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Special Presentations section, where it received a standing ovation. Its theatrical release is scheduled for November 7, 2025.
The cast also features Ben Foster as Jim Martin, Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters (Christy’s mother), and Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, one of her biggest rivals in the ring who is now married to Christy.
Sweeney underwent intense training to portray the boxer, with up to three daily boxing sessions, nutritional control, and specialized physical work. Christy Martin herself was on set to advise her, an experience the actress described as “a dream… but also intimidating.”
Critics have highlighted Sweeney’s powerful transformation, and there is already buzz about a potential path to nominations during awards season. Christy and the crew were received with a standing ovation.
