Ilunga Makabu to Defend WBC Africa Cruiserweight Title Against Dodzi Kameh in Kinshasa
World Boxing Council (WBC) Africa cruiserweight champion, Ilunga Makabu, will defend his title this Friday, September 5, in a last-minute change.
Makabu will face Dodzi Kameh at the Stadium Basket, Stade Des Martyrs, in Kinshasa, after his original opponent, Charles Manyuchi, suffered an injury that forced him out of the fight.
The opponent change was quickly approved by the African Boxing Union (ABU) President, Houcine Houichi, ensuring the event will proceed as planned. This last-minute adjustment highlights the organizations’ commitment to maintaining event continuity and offering high-quality fights to fans.
Makabu, one of the most prominent figures in African boxing, will put his belt on the line against a formidable opponent. The fight has generated great anticipation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and promises to be an exciting bout that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
The event is expected to draw thousands of fans to the iconic Stade Des Martyrs, solidifying Kinshasa as a key hub on the professional boxing map in Africa.
This fight is part of the Year of Africa celebration; earlier this year, the World Boxing Council named 2025 the Year of Africa.
This celebration commemorates the history, achievements, magnificence, and splendor of African boxing. In January 2025, the WBC announced this would be the Year of Africa, which has been celebrated with various fights between boxers from the African continent held in African territory, demonstrating the great quality and variety of talent that exists in this beautiful continent.
Some of the events that have celebrated the Year of Africa include:
Kevin Lerena opened these celebrations by fighting and retaining the WBC bridgerweight world title.
Lawrence Okolie defended his WBC silver heavyweight title on the main card headlined by Oleksandr Usyk.
David Mwale and Michael Decardi contested the WBC international bantamweight title in Zambia.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle,” a commemorative belt was created.
