On March 3, 1995, in Tauranga, New Zealand, a warrior was born who would later conquer the world of boxing: Cherneka “Sugar Neekz” Johnson. Raised in Australia since she was 11 and proud of her Māori roots (Ngāti Ranginui),has shown that talent, dedication , and heart can triumph.
Cherneka made her professional debut in 2016. Since then, her journey has been marked by memorable victories, but it was in July 2025 when she wrote her biggest chapter: she was crowned the undisputed bantamweight (118 lb) champion by defeating Shurretta Metcalf by technical knockout in the ninth round at the legendary Madison Square Garden.
With this triumph, she became the first Australian woman and the first Māori boxer to unify four titles in the same division. Before that historic night, Johnson had already begun her reign after defeating the British boxer Nina Hughes twice.
Today, Cherneka Johnson has registered with BoxMed, the app that will help boost her performance, take care of her health, and facilitate her professional management with: precise and safe monitoring of her ideal weight to arrive at each fight in optimal condition, recording and monitoring of wounds and injuries to avoid unnecessary risks, and health, nutrition, hydration, or training advice adapted to her competitive calendar. Her entire career is available digitally.
At 30 years old, “Sugar Neekz” is not only an undisputed champion but also an inspiration who, with the support of BoxMed, continues to pave the way for international women’s boxing.
