Filipino boxing legend Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao was honored with the “Aztec Warrior” belt following his spectacular performance in his return to the ring.
On Saturday, July 19, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pacquiao starred in a historic night, as he contested the WBC super welterweight world championship. His performance was so impressive that the fans voted to award him the “Aztec Warrior” belt, a distinction reserved for the most outstanding performances of the night.
In a video message, Pacquiao expressed his excitement and deep gratitude for receiving this recognition.
Also honored was Sebastián Fundora, who successfully defended his WBC super welterweight world title against Tim Tszyu in a memorable bout.
The “Aztec Warrior” belt was originally created by the WBC to pay tribute to ring wars between Mexican fighters, as part of the promotion for the fight between Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro. Although the much-anticipated rematch didn’t take place due to medical complications on Fierro’s side, the WBC kept the tradition alive and decided to award the belt to the most outstanding fighter of the night via the fans’ choice.
This time, that honor went to Manny Pacquiao, who, at 46 years old, once again showed why he is one of the greatest of all time.
