The World Boxing Council reiterates its firm commitment to transparency and fairness in boxing, highlighting Open Scoring as one of the fundamental pillars of this vision.
The implementation of Open Scoring in certain WBC-sanctioned bouts allows judges’ scores to be publicly announced after a determined number of rounds, typically after the 4th and 8th rounds. In the case of the successful WBC Grand Prix world boxing event, it’s after the 2nd and 4th rounds.
This measure, which has been in place for several years, seeks to provide greater clarity and accountability for both fighters and fans, as well as corner teams.
Benefits of WBC Open Scoring:
Greater Transparency: Provides an instant view of the scores, eliminating doubts about the direction of the fight.
Judge Accountability: By making intermediate scores public, judges’ accountability increases, promoting more accurate and objective scoring.
Improved Strategic Decisions: Allows corners to adjust their strategies based on the scores, which can lead to more exciting and dynamic fights.
Enhanced Fan Experience: Spectators can follow the progress of the fight with greater understanding and excitement.
Combats Controversy: Helps mitigate post-fight controversies by offering a clear picture of the score’s development.
While the implementation of Open Scoring has generated discussions within the boxing community, the WBC firmly believes in its long-term benefits for the sport and is proud that it is being used in more and more places around the world.
