Sturdy, hard hitting rising Star Callum ”King” Walsh, defends his WBC Continental of the Americas Super Welterweight Crown for the third time, on this occasion, against ”Deadly” Dean Sutherland at The Theater, Madison Square Garden on Sunday March 16th in a battle of Celtic southpaw warriors, on the Eve of St Patrick`s Day.
Callum aged twenty-four from Cork, who is trained by Hall of Fame Coach Freddie Roach, has already built an eye catching pro career of 12-0, 10 KO`s and is seeking to once again impress, as he tops the bill, in front of a sellout crowd. Dean Sutherland who two years older is from the fishing outpost of Aberdeen, and a former WBC International Silver welterweight champion, who has now grown into this beefier division, is 19-1, 7 KO`s. Extolling the virtues of ”Scotland The Brave,” this is his first time fighting outside his homeland, venturing across ”The Pond,” and it`s going to be a test of piquant thistle, rather than purple patch heather. To prepare for it he`s been sparring with former Undisputed super-lightweight champion and compatriot Josh Taylor.
Tom Loeffler of 360 Promotions said: ”After Callum`s second round knockout of Przemyslaw Runowski in Dublim, this is the next step towards fighting for the World Title. Callum is on his way. He`s rated number six by the World Boxing Council and headlining Madison Square Garden for the third time, continuing the momentum of his career, being the fastest rising star in Boxing.”
Dean whose pro debut was in 2018, has fought 117 rounds. While Callum who debuted as a pro three years later, has made shorter work of opponents, necessitating just 45 rounds thus far. Tom said: ”Dean is definitely an experienced boxer and this will be something that Callum will need to figure out. Callum has very good boxing skills, coupled with his size and power, it`ll be a good fight and Callum always likes to put on a great show for the fans.
”Freddie is very happy with the progress that Callum is making as he`s maturing into his prime years and he`s ready to fight the top guys in this division, so there are some great match ups, but he`s got to one hundred percent focused on Dean Sutherland.
”Callum is the first Irish boxer I`ve worked with, having promoted boxers from all around the world including GGG from Kazakhstan, the Klitschko brothers from Ukraine and Roman ”chocolatito” Gonzalez from Nicaragua and with his inbuilt Irish fanbase it`s great.
”it`s going to be a great weekend for Boxing in New York City. Callum sold out the 3Arena in Dublin and a lot of fans who attended that, are coming to New York for St Paddy`s Day, to celebrate the Irish National Holiday and to watch an Irish Star fight at Madison Square Garden. There will be a loud and enthusiastic crowd.”
For Callum this fight is the only current focal point. Tom agrees on the single minded determination, astutely stressing: ”The last thing we want to do, is to rush Callum. He is doing great with his marketability, promotion and his natural charisma. Freddie is teaching him at a fast pace and I would say that within one to two years, we could see him challenging for a world title.
”I definitely put Callum in the rising Star category. When I started working with Triple G, he was already thirty years old, so the clock was ticking very fast. With Callum he was twenty-one and for the last three years we have got him to twelve and 0 with ten KO victories and at twenty-four, he`s just entering the prime of his career. So we are looking forward to some great things from Callum with the tutor ledge of Hall of Fame Coach Freddie Roach.”
