Boxing is a national heritage and the highest expression of greatness that puts Mexico atop the global summit.
With all due respect to other sports, it is the one that has generated the most Olympic medals, and with more than 200 world champions, which has given unparalleled moments of glory to the history of Mexican sport. The Aztec warriors who got into the ring this last weekend at the T-Mobile in Las Vegas, made it clear why Mexico has captured boxing glory. Eleven of the 26 fighters during the 13 fights were Mexican or of descent from our great country.
David Benavidez gave a fantastic demonstration of his quality, and made it clear that he is one of the greats of current boxing; Benavidez soundly defeated Cuban David Morrell, who until Saturday night was undefeated and held the WBA world championship.
Benavidez retained his interim WBC light heavyweight world championship, and generated a chorus of: Mexico, Mexico, Mexico! Throughout the packed arena.
Now David Benavidez has earned the right to fight the winner of the highly anticipated rematch, which will take place on February 22, in Saudi Arabia, between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
One of the most emotional moments was the heartfelt tribute paid to our beloved champion, Israel Magnífico Vázquez, who passed away last December.
In the ring was his widow Laura, accompanied by Israel Jr., Anthony, and little Zoe, who held the beautiful Guerrero Azteca belt, produced in his honor, to commemorate the wondrous fights between Mexican boxers.
Israel gave great battles against compatriots of the caliber of Chololo Larios, Jhonny González and the memorable quartet with Rafael Márquez.
This commemorative belt was put into play in the fight between Isaac Pitbull Cruz and Angel Fierro.
There could not have been a better and more fitting tribute to honor him via the Guerrero Azteca belt!
What an incredible fight!
From bell to bell they gave each other a brave and determined fight without taking a single step back.
The pfans reacted, with thrilled awe and this fight immediately became a classic which will be talked about for a long time. The most incredible thing was when the bell rang to start the last round, both of them embraced each other in an emotional hug in the center of the ring, and seconds later they went back to giving it their magnificent all.
Pitbull Cruz won in a unanimous decision. Isaac has everything to become an idol, a commercial style, the so-called Mexican style. The power and the glory.
He went all out, just like Fierro. The scene was set and the ring was ready for the consecration of Benavídez.
Israel Vazquez is watching from Heaven, with pride. How his legacy was recognized with this performance, with an arena standing in unified applause, while the bell rang in his eternal memory.
Did you know that…?
The World Boxing Council has a rule in which the official scores of the Judges are announced at the end of the fourth and eighth rounds. Only the United States and England do not allow this practice.
What is a serious problem is that the fans at home, and in many cases on the giant screens in the arena, see the scores of the commentators that are neither official nor necessarily correct, but have great influence on the fan.
Anecdote of today
Coming to the MGM brought back incredible memories of my dad.
From 1994 to 2013, I accompanied my dad on countless occasions to functions, where a large number of superstars participated. Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar de la Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Saul Canelo Alvarez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez, among many other great fighters.
“My son: take me to the supermarket to get a couple of things to have in the room…” We invariably came back with bags full of fruit, cheese, nuts, soda and anything else that comes to mind.
