WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán was present at the WBO convention held in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, where Gustavo Olivieri was elected as the new president of the organization. Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel, who was president for almost 30 years, withdrew his candidacy and asked for a vote for the organization’s legal advisor.

The four presidents of the governing bodies of boxing worldwide met to discuss issues of great importance for the good of the sport, such as unification fights, ring officials, mandatory fights, rules, among other important points.

The 50th anniversary of Rumble in the Jungle was celebrated. A great fight between North American warriors, Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round in Kinshasa, Zaire. In this fight the WBC heavyweight title was at stake.

During the traditional “Martes de Cafe” the new USWBC champion, Bryan “Destroyer” Mercado received from the hands of the the WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán and from Engineer Fernando Espino, General Secretary of the Metro Union, the belt he won by defeating the Chilean José Velázquez.

On September 29, boxer Mylik Birdsong, with a record of 15-1, tragically passed away in Los Angeles. He was scheduled to fight on the Tom Loeffler 360 Promotions card in Commerce, CA. During this evening, his mother and family, Tom Loeffler and all the boxing fans who were present honored him with 10 bell rings and a WBC medal in his memory.

At the Graakjaer Arena in Holstebrol, Denmark, local fighter and undefeated World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Dina Thorslund defended her world crown by defeating tough Japanese Terumi Nuki.

The José Sulaimán Boxers Fund celebrated 12 years of existence, granting more than $2 million dollars in support to fighters and former fighters from Nicaragua, Argentina, Thailand, China, Colombia, Spain, the United States, the Philippines, Panama, Mexico, among many other countries.

Ukrainian heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and English challenger Tyson Fury met in London to promote the fight they will hold on December 21 in Saudi Arabia, a rematch of one of the best fights of the year.

The 6th Amateur Boxing Tournament was held with great success in the Huayamilpas Ecological Park in Mexico City, presented by the Federal Protection Service (SPF), the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) and the World Boxing Council (WBC). The tournament aimed to promote the physical, mental and social development of members of various security institutions in Mexico, who participated in this important event.

This first tournament, called Colosseum Of Combat/Alexandra, will feature the participation of current South African middleweight champion John Bopape and many more prospects belonging to the WARRIOR ASCENT program, an initiative based on the extremely successful boxing development program introduced by the WBC in Mexico together with RING TELMEX-TELCEL that has produced more than twenty world champions.

Gabriela “Bonita” Sánchez successfully defended her WBC silver flyweight title, beating the experienced Japanese Okuda Tomoko by unanimous decision in a fight held at the BUAP Arena in Puebla, Mexico.

Mauricio and Héctor Sulaimán visited the Holy Father Francis, accompanying Adrián Pallarols, who is the Pope’s goldsmith, and one of the most beloved and closest to him since his childhood. It was an unforgettable meeting where the Holy Father gave a series of blessings to the world of boxing.

During this trip, Mauricio Sulaimán was with important people, holding successful meetings.

Joselito Velázquez, WBC super flyweight silver champion, visited the governor of Quintana Roo, Mexico, Mara Lezama. The WBC Featherweight Champion, the Australian Skye Nicolson, successfully defended her crown by defeating by unanimous decision the English challenger Raven Chapman, this Saturday, in one of the preliminary fights of the “Beterbiev vs Bivol” card, which took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

At the Salle Louis Dewerdt, Dunkirk, France, the local fighter Priscilla Peterle defeated the Dominican Claribel Mena by unanimous decision, winning the WBC Super Welterweight Silver title.

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and the World Boxing Council announced the creation of the ITESM – WBC Scientific Medical Committee that will carry out a multidisciplinary research program, as well as various educational and outreach activities around topics such as mental health, nutrition, prevention of brain damage, personal finances, among many others aimed at improving the health and well-being of millions of people around the world of boxing.

The Undisputed video game was officially released for all platforms, the innovative boxing game that comes from the development of Steel City and the edition of Deep Silver.

In Verona, Italy, as part of a strategy between the government of Thailand and the WBC Muay Thai, a series of activities were held to promote the art and culture inherent to this sport throughout the world with the firm intention of promoting sports tourism in this region.
