The World Boxing Council super middleweight champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, will defend his belt on September 14 against Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga.
This fight is rather special for several reasons, including the fact that #CaneloBerlanga adds a new chapter to the legendary Puerto Rico vs. Mexico boxing rivalry, and that the fight will be held in one of the most important boxing venues: The T-Mobile Arena in September.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez debuted in 2005 and has developed a career full of success and triumphs. During his brilliant progression he has conquered the super welterweight, middleweight , super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Edgar Berlanga, 27, will have the opportunity of a lifetime to challenge Canelo for his world titles.
Fight week has already begun and the protagonists are preparing to arrive in Las Vegas, Nevada; However, today the proud Green and Gold champion, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, took the time to talk to the press during our Coffee Tuesday from the United States of America.
This is what the World Boxing Council super middleweight world champion had to say:
“It is a pleasure for me, you already know. My respects to all the media that are always there and aware of my career. It is an honor for me to be able to talk to you and to be able to contribute a little to your respective work.
“For the WBC, my greatest pride. It is a true honor to be the Green and Gold Champion for years. We are ready for one more defense.
“I am very happy to be able to represent my country, especially around this historic rivalry that exists between Mexico and Puerto Rico. Berlanga is a young and very strong fighter, with a lot of desire and eagerness to win, so we expect a great battle.
“I love boxing and I continue to enjoy what I do. I would like to continue fighting and writing stories. I am very proud of what my fellow boxers have done and of all the records they broke. I want to focus on achieving the goals I set for myself and breaking the records that come my way.
“To all the young boxers, I wish you the best of luck. Keep working hard, with dedication, determination and a lot of strength.”
Mauricio Sulaimán:
“The World Boxing Council commemorative belts for May 5 and September 16 were created as a special trophy, which is given to the winner of great fights held around these two Mexican holidays, regardless of the nationality of the contenders.“Mexican migrants began to celebrate these two dates and boxing was gradually included until these dates became the most important in world boxing.
For this reason, since 2017 the World Boxing Council launched the initiative to present special belts and since then every year a culture is selected to create these belts and present a tribute from Mexico to the world.“On this occasion, the Tamaulipas II Belt with its characteristic leather and a beautiful plaque will be the special trophy that will be awarded to the winner of this historic duel between Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The WBC wishes both contenders great success.”
