Victor Ortiz will return to the ring to face Rodrigo Damián Coria this Saturday, August 24 at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City.
The clash between Ortiz and Coria will be part of the card featuring the exhibition fight between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III, who will have a second bout, after their controversial confrontation last year.
Ortiz (33-7-3, 25 KOs) hasn’t stepped into the ring since May 2022, when he got off the canvas against Todd Manuel to win a unanimous decision on the David Benavidez-David Lemieux headliner.
The former WBC welterweight champion has faced some of the sport’s finest fighters, beating Nate Campbell, Andre Berto and Vivian Harris, but his highest-profile fight came in 2011, when he was knocked out in four rounds by Mayweather.
“Thank you to my beloved Mexico for bringing your son FROM THE OTHER SIDE! Very grateful for all the support and how they have received me!” Ortiz wrote on his social media.
The Argentine Coria is a 25-year-old southpaw who lost by decision to Brian Norman Jr. and Peter Dobson, the two most notable opponents he has faced so far. His biggest win came in August 2023, when he won a split decision over previously undefeated Marco Garcia.
