Jamaine Ortiz, conquered the vacant World Boxing Council youth lightweight championship, defeating previously unbeaten Ricardo Quiroz (10-1) at the Twin River Casino Hotel.
Ortiz (10-0) won on all the judges’ cards, gaining a unanimous decision with identical scores on all three 78-74 cards.
Ortiz, 22, won each of the first six rounds showing greater speed and using a large repertoire of body and head shots that dented Quiroz’s performance. However, Ricardo rallied in the seventh and eighth rounds to fight back.
The match was very entertaining and hard fought between two undefeated fighters who gave their absolute best in the ring.
With this triumph, Ortiz joins the select group of fighters who have conquered the WBC Youth Championship, including Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, Timothy Bradley, Danny García, Humberto Soto, Jorge Arce and Leo Santa Cruz.
