It`s hard to match the boundless enthusiasm, energy, commitment and sheer unswerving determination of Cancun Boxing Promoter Pepe Gomez.
Pepe, who`s also the owner of newspaper Quequi, has called upon the skills of one of his graphic designers to create the logo for the World Boxing Council`s 57th annual Convention, which will this year be held at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancun, October 20-26th. He`s also acting as host and co organizer for Boxing`s largest annual event.
Pepe is certainly no stranger to organizing Boxing Spectaculars in Cancun. He`ll fight em on the beaches and the landing grounds! He was involved in the first WBC Women`s Convention, The WBC Fiftieth Convention, when a frail Muhammad Ali was crowned “King of Boxing,” and treated with the utmost care and courtesy, the first WBC Medical Convention. And History in Cancun, which hosted the first ever heavyweight championship between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter, co organized by the flamboyant Don King… and of course Pepe.
Pepe`s aim has been to build a house with a strong foundation on rock… as well as sun kissed sand. He says he wants to further develop Cancan from a sea and sand destination to so much more. Part of that is the rich Mayan tradition. An example can be seen on the poster for the Convention, which has a Mayan Symbol of three lines and four points representing fifty seven years, but that`s barely scratching the surface. Pepe Gomez has given the boxing world an array of world champions from Cancun with more on the way.
The WBC`s 57th birthday bash will kick off with a golf tournament and then a Mayan themed inauguration to remember. Don King inspired Pepe to carry a large Cuban cigar, which remains perpetually unlit in his right hand. But at the World Boxing Council`s weekly Press Conference, which was this week in Mexico City`s Food Market, following his vivid presentation, Pepe also gave WBC pause for thought. From that same hand, he handed Mauricio Sulaiman a Pepe Gomez hero doll. Cancun`s answer to Action Man!!!
