Riddick Bowe defeated undisputed world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in the first fight of their trilogy.
Bowe knocked down the former cruiserweight king in the 11th round on the way to claiming a unanimous decision at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
However, the toe-to-toe slugfest between the undefeated heavyweights is best remembered by the tenth round, regarded by many as one of the greatest rounds in boxing history.
Bowe battered the champion in search of a knockout after staggering him with a vicious uppercut but somehow Holyfield survived the onslaught and battled back to finish strongly.
“Round of the Year,” said commentator Al Bernstein, as the bell sounded with both men still trading blows. “That was one of the greatest rounds in heavyweight history. Period!”
