World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10th every year, is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and promote open discussions to reduce stigma.
Mental health is a vital aspect of an individual’s overall well-being, and it impacts people from all walks of life, including athletes.
The World Boxing Council (WBC) – together with WBC Cares – have recognized the importance of mental health in the boxing community and have taken significant steps to support their fighters’ mental well-being.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has commented:
“We try to spread the message that no-one is alone, everyone is beautiful and this is what we will always stand for. I invite everyone to be empathetic and not minimize people’s emotions. The world is better when we unite.”
Beyond their efforts to ensure the physical health and safety of boxers, the WBC has also been proactive in addressing the mental health challenges that athletes may face.
Green is the universal symbolic colour for Mental Health Day. Today and always, the green (and gold) belt, typically a symbol of physical strength and accomplishment, is transformed on Mental Health Day to represent the strength of the mind. It reminds us that just as athletes train and prepare for success in the ring, individuals should also invest in their mental fitness to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
