Australian “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr., WBO, WBA, IBF lightweight world champion, and WBC Franchise boxer, will battle WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney, for supremacy of the 135 division pounds.
This eagerly-awaited match is on Saturday, June 4 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
Kambosos, who was born and raised in Sydney, returns to his country to hold the biggest fight in Australian history. Event organizers hope to break the Australian attendance record of 51,026, set by the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn in 2017.
Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) turned pro in 2013 and fought his first 13 bouts in Australia before embarking on a quest for the world crown. He earned his lightweight title shot with an October 2020 win over former British world champion Lee Selby in London. Thirteen months later, he traveled to New York and upset 10-1 favorite Teofimo Lopez by split decision in a 12-round battle to become the unified lightweight champion.
Haney (27-0, 15 KOs), a Las Vegas resident who won seven national titles as an amateur, was destined for stardom when he turned pro at age 17 in December 2015. He made his U.S. debut in April 2016 on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley III undercard in Las Vegas. Before reaching legal drinking age in the United States, Haney rose through the ranks with one-sided victories over veteran contenders Mason Menard, Juan Carlos Burgos and Antonio Moran. His knockout of Moran was voted ESPN’s 2019 Knockout of the Year.
Haney won the WBC lightweight title over Zaur Abdullaev in September 2019. He has defended the Green and Gold Belt four times and has defeated former world champions in his last three fights.
In 2021, Haney outpointed former champion Jorge Linares over 12 rounds in May, and followed that up with a clear points victory over former interim champion Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. in December.
Kambosos commented: “After five years of chasing championship glory abroad and fighting in enemy territory, I return home to defend what I have conquered in the world of boxing, my world lightweight titles.
“Everything that I have put into my mind and manifested has come true with my tireless hard work, dedication, and discipline to the sport that I love. I am very excited and hungry to continue building my legacy, and I will emerge victorious by any means necessary on June 4.”
For his part, Haney stated: “First of all, I would like to give all praise to Allah. Without him, none of this is possible. Second, I would like to thank my father and coach, Bill Haney; and to my team and family for his support and countless sacrifices throughout this journey. Thanks to Lou DiBella, Bob Arum and ESPN for giving us this great platform and opportunity of a lifetime.
“I started my career fighting in small bars in Mexico. I am now on the cusp of greatness, displaying my skills on the world stage battling for lightweight supremacy. I didn’t come this far, just to get this far. On June 4, I will claim my place in history and add to my legacy by being the undisputed king of lightweights.”
It`s promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Ferocious Promotions, Top Rank, Devin Haney Promotions, Duco Events and TEG Sport, will air live on ESPN.N.
