The President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán had a memorable one-on-one, this time with fabled world champion and member of the Hall of Fame Erik Morales, a Tijuana fighter who made history, as the possessor of pure talent, but above all, a great heart that led him to conquer four world titles in different divisions and become an idol and legend.
Erik, who from a young age was immersed in the world of gloves, remembered the man who led him to conquer his dreams: his father, José “Olivaritos” Morales, whom he remembered as a man passionate about boxing and a perfectionist and although he recognized that throughout his career there were moments of great tension between them, he is and will always be the fundamental and essential base
Erik said that the most difficult thing about being a boxer is not getting between the ropes or taking punches, but the sacrifice of perseverance and discipline, keeping yourself at the ideal weight, the workouts and everything that exists leading up to a fight.
Satisfied with all the achievements he made inside the ring, Erik stressed that he was never afraid to face Juan Manuel Márquez, he was even assured that on both occasions that the fight was going to take place in 2011 and 2012, and he accepted. However, it did not happen due to Márquez’s refusal.
Erik’s life has taken great turns, from being world champion, representing Vicente Saldivar in a movie, to becoming a Federal Deputy in politics.
Erik especially remembered Don José Sulaimán, a man who was not only his guide and mentor in the sport, but who became his friend. Together they carried out great projects and initiatives, however “crazy” they might seem, among them was when the first WBC women’s title was contested and that at the suggestion of Erik: The fight was starred a young woman who was not very well known at the time, but that over time became an icon, of course we are referring to Jackie Nava.
As is tradition in these WBC Talks, Erik not only created his ideal boxer but also gave us his top 5 of the best boxers in the world.
