Lean, whipcord Tommy stood out and stood tall at welterweight, super welterweight, middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight. A master blaster!
In his career no one was exempt! He fought great boxers and his style guaranteed that it was never dull! Those opponents were Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez, Iran Barkley, Pipino Cuevas and a good few more!
Tommy, who utilized powerful fists, speed, reinforced by extraordinarily long arms. He retired with a record of 61 wins with 48 knockouts, 5 losses and a draw. The Hitman was a constant crowd pleaser. The fans adored him!
James Nathaniel Toney, born August 24, 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was an outstanding fighter of extraordinary natural gifts and skills, who had, saw and executed action in the middle, super middle, cruiser and heavyweight divisions. That`s how versatile he was!
Toney began his professional career on October 26, 1988 and retired with a record of 77 wins with 47 knockouts, 10 losses and 3 draws.
In his fabled career he faced the best. “Second to Nunn” Michael Nunn, Iran “The Blade” Barkley, Roy Jones Jr, Montell Griffiin, Evander Holyfield and Hasim Rahman. James Toney, was durable, powerful, brilliant, resourceful and strategically cunning, with the skill of an old timer, transcending all epochs to be An All Time Great.
