On the final day of September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez will defend his super middleweight world titles against the undisputed super welterweight world champion, Texan Jermell Charlo.
We remember the finest champions of the super welterweight and super middleweight divisions as a tribute to Canelo and Charlo, who will dish up and dish out a generous portion of history, since it is the first time that two undisputed champions face each other, each one being the best in their division.
In this “Walk of Fame” today we remember Nigel Benn and Sergio Martinez.
Nigel Gregory Benn, born January 22, 1964, was one of the greatest super middleweight champions of all time. The British fighter remained active as a professional from 1987 to 1996. He was WBO middleweight champion in 1990 and later WBC super middleweight champion from 1992 to 1996.
He scored notable victories over Doug DeWitt, Iran Barkley, Thulani Malinga, Mauro Galvano and Gerald McClellan.
Nicknamed “The Dark Destroyer” for his formidable punching power, Benn retired with a knockout percentage of 83.3%.
Sergio Gabriel Martínez, born in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina on February 21, 1975, was WBC middleweight world champion, and previously super welterweight.
During his time as champion, he was recognized as one of the pound-for-pound best in the world.
