On the final day of September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez will defend his super middleweight world titles against the undisputed super welterweight world champion, Texan Jermell Charlo.
We remember the best champions of the super welterweight and super middleweight divisions as a tribute to Canelo and Charlo, who will dish up and dish out a generous portion of history, since it is the first time that two undisputed champions face each other, each one being the best in their division.
In this “Walk of Fame” today we remember Joe Calzaghe and Terry Norris.
Joseph William Calzaghe born March 23, 1972 in London, England, was one of the most notable champions in boxing history.
Joe, who retired undefeated with a record of 46 wins and 32 knockouts, is also known as the “Italian Dragon,” because his father was originally from Italy.
He has been one of the few boxers who has been champion in all four boxing organizations, facing great rivals in his career such as Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Mikkel Kessler, Sakio Bika, Robin Reid, among others.
Terry Norris was born in Lubbock, Texas on June 17, 1967. As an amateur he achieved an impressive record of 291 fights won and 4 losses. In 1990 he faced John Mugabi for the WBC super welterweight title. Terry sent his opponent to the canvas in the first round, winning the green and gold title, in one of the most memorable nights of his career.
After defending his belt against Rene Jacquot, Norris faced the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard at Madison Square Garden in February 1991 and after an unforgettable encounter Terry took the victory.
In December 1993, former champion Simon Brown ended Terry’s undefeated streak, knocking him out in the fourth round. However, by 1994 Terry had the opportunity for a rematch, where he regained the title by unanimous decision.
His last fight was against Laurent Boudouani in 1998 at the Palais des Sports in Paris.
Throughout his career he won a record of 47 fights, 31 of them by knockout.
