With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games well underway, search specialists at The Koozai Group thought it would be interesting to use their search expertise to create a report around the top searched-for Olympic sports across the globe. Through mining search data, Koozai has unveiled that boxing is a worldwide favourite when it comes to search volume, coming in fourth place overall with over 2.3million searches. As many as 16 competing countries have been searching for the sport above 39 others happening at this year’s Olympics, with Mexico leading the way with almost 75,000 searches. Second place when it comes to the data is Denmark, with 60,500 searches.
Koozai also discovered that more than half (59%) of the world’s countries are searching for football over any other sporting event that features in the Olympics. When looking at all the available search data for 188 of the 195 countries, a whopping 4.9million average monthly online searches for the sport have been recorded, beating skateboarding in second place, which achieved a worldwide search interest of 2.8million in comparison. Us Brits are leading the way when it comes to football searches too, making up a massive 1.2million of this recorded search data.
Skateboarding is a new entry for this year and is also proving a popular first choice for a few countries, with the USA leading the way. The track and field giants are putting skateboarding ahead of all other sports according to their searches, with 823,000 average monthly searches. The same can be said for Germany, with 201,000 searches for skateboarding making it the most popular sport for Germans at this Olympic Games. This is a 39% difference from their second most popular searched-for sport – tennis.
The data has also uncovered some interesting and unexpected favourites for certain countries, with Japan’s search data putting diving at the top, even though they’re yet to win a medal in this discipline and are well-known for their Judo achievements at the Olympics. This is demonstrated in the data by a 178% difference in searches between the two sports.
Koozai has also discovered that Uruguay is backing handball over other top Olympic sports, and Egypt is most interested in the old-school sporting event that is fencing.
Golf is coming up trumps for a few countries too, and interestingly they’re not countries you might associate with their rich golfing opportunities – Koozai noted 165,000 searches for golf in Brazil, 90,500 in Turkey and 60,500 in Poland.
When taking football out of the equation, the data shows that, based on popularity rather than search data volumes, countries are backing the tennis (41 countries) and even though the search volume doesn’t put it in second place, it still has almost 2.2million worldwide searches, of which almost 250,000 of those searches belong to the Italians.
