
In a fight which he dominated from start to finish for 12 scheduled rounds, Cuban Yordenis Ugas defeated Mexican American Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. by a unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ugas’ fight against Figueroa Jr. was an eliminator match for the welterweight crown of the World Boxing Council. From the first bell the height and reach advantages of the Cuban fighter, who`s a natural welterweight were abundantly evident. In the very first round a solid right hand sent Figueroa wobbling into the ropes, and he received a standing count.
In the fifth round, Ugas was docked a point for holding, but it was Figueroa, who tried to keep the battle at close range, attempting to avoid impacts coming from middle and long range
Ugas closed the final rounds very well to take the unanimous decision. The three judges had it 119-107. With this victory, Ugas improved his record to 24-4, with 11 knockouts and won the World Boxing Council welter elimintaory fight. Figueroa lost his previously unbeaten record to 28-1-1, with 19 knockouts. A hard and unsuccessful climb from lightweight to welterweight.
