During the “Coffee Tuesday” press conference, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, was clear in saying that unfortunately in some cases the respect and honor of boxers and their corners has been lost.
We have repeatedly been witnesses of disrespect and even aggressions between boxers and even though there have thankfully not been severe consequences, this behavior could cause an unfortunate accident or even put fights at risk.
It is for this reason that the WBC will seek to create an ethics protocol for this type of event as despite these protocols being the responsibility of the promoter, it is necessary to implement certain rules, since boxing have always been characterized as a sport where the respect and admiration of the rival are the most important matter.
He commented that in last weekend’s fights it was very painful to see how the boxers who took the loss tarnished the victory of their rivals by demonstrating an unsportsmanlike attitude that in no way is consistent with the values of the WBC.
Although it is understandable that with the heat of the moment things can get out of control, he exhorted all boxers not to get carried away by the primary emotions because they are the inspiration of all those who watch them on the television, but above, they all role models for children and young people.
