Our dear friend, respected colleague and beloved Herb Santos, a prominent and so admired ring official, has passed away.
Herb Santos was a prominent Reno, Nevada attorney, Nevada boxing judge, former Nevada Athletic Commissioner, and a loyal WBC and NABF member.
We will greatly miss him at fights and conventions. It will never be the same!
Herb is simply irreplaceable. We won’t see his like again.
Herb was a prominent boxing judge for more than 40 years. He began judging amateur boxing in the 1970s and has since been a part of more than 700 professional bouts.
Throughout his long and distinguished career in the United States, Canada and Mexico, he was simply the best.
He had the opportunity to be a judge in fights of legends, such as Roy Jones, Mark Breland, Michael Carbajal, Wilfredo Gómez, Lennox Lewis, Badou Jack, Marvin Hagler, Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Sugar” Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, among others. He even has a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
From 1985 to 1988 Herb served as commissioner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, appointed by then-Governor Richard Bryan. He served as chairman of the commission from the fall of 1987 to the fall of 1988.
Before becoming a boxing judge, Herb was stationed in the United States Air Force in Reno, Nevada and also served in the United States Navy.
He also advocated for new safety measures in the sport and greater contractual protections for boxers.
Herb was a loyal member of the WBC and NABF and we are now so sad, but simultaneously so very proud.
Our marvelous and constant friend was a man dedicated to boxing and always performed with honesty and integrity, which is why he will be remembered as a truly great man.
The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaimán, send our deepest condolences to Santos family and Herb’s many friends all around the world.
Goodbye for now Dearest Friend. We will ALWAYS remember You as A Great and the very finest example.
