Last July 21, Edy Valencia Mercado from Sinaloa suffered an injury after his fight against George Acosta at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, for which he was urgently admitted to the San Antonio Regional 999 hospital in Ontario.
These have been difficult months for him and his family but fortunately he has made progress and is, like a champion, giving his best in rehabilitation therapies.
It is true that he has a long road ahead, but based upon the combined efforts, love and dedication his family, we are completely sure that he will come out with his hand raised.
The WBC has been in contact with his wife Rosaura Valencia to reiterate that José Sulaimán Fund is unconditionally in the champion’s corner and will follow the process of his recovery step by step, providing him with support.
This is part of a moving message that Rosaura shared with us: “I want to thank the WBC for the financial support of the Jose Sulaiman Fund for the support and support they have given us. It will be well used to address the situation that Edy is going through.
“It’s nice to know that in sport there is human quality that supports the less fortunate. My heart longs for change. Those rules and regulations be complied with, and work continues with prevention measures for young athletes who do nothing but pursue their dreams. Thank you and God bless you.”
The José Sulaimán Fund was the last great achievement of Don José, who dreamed of having this resource to be able to support boxers facing crises of various kinds around the world. The Fund is administered by the Nevada Community Foundation. Don Jose`s parting gift, which built an everlasting legacy.
