American Shawn Porter (29-2-1, 17 KOs) of 31 years defends his welterweight title of the World Boxing Council, in Carson, California, this Saturday against the Cuban Yordenis Ugas (23-3 with 11 knockouts).
Porter won his WBC crown last September after defeating Danny Garcia by unanimous decision. His last knockout came in 2017, when he defeated Andre Berto.
Ugas, 32 years old, has regained his level after consecutive defeats in 2014, which seemed to have marooned him. But then he won eight fights in a row, including knockout victories over Ray Robinson and Jonathan Batista in 2018.
Ugas, a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said his amateur career continues to influence his pro career, helping him to adapt to varying and different styles.
“I do not think Ugas has fought at the top level as a professional,” Porter said. “however I wont underestimate him.”
Porter weighed 146.8 pounds on his second attempt after being 1.8 pounds up; while Ugas registered 146.5 pounds.
