A meeting, a conversation and a promise at the World Boxing Council`s Acapulco Convention, led to a wonderful opportunity for some Merseyside youngsters who are striving to fulfil their boxing dreams.
Top English Referee Mark Lyson Lyson and former WBC welterweight champion and WBC Ambassador John H Stracey were chatting and Mark asked John H if he`d one day come along to Anfield Amateur Boxing Club where he coaches, to give the youngsters a motivational talk, answer their questions and help them with training tips.
John H`s word is his bond, so he arranged the trip, coordinating with Mark. John H told the children about his start in boxing, how it had developed, what he`d achieved as an amateur and a professional and that he`d worked his utmost to achieve it day in day out, day and night, year in and year out. His talk enthralled the kids and was an absolute fab hit.
Then John H, helped with the coaching, taking time to onpass training tips and show the children how to glean the very best out of their efforts, burgeoning skills and boundless energetic work ethic. He said: “There was this young girl and she has a fantastic left hand. But she was dropping that same left hand after throwing it. So, I advised her to keep her hand up, close by her cheek, as her reaction will be a split second quicker, and she immediately grasped the sense of this and corrected the fault. It`s things like this which are so important and make all the difference in boxing.”
Mark said: “The kids were absolutely thrilled and fascinated. John was so generous with his time. It made all of this so marvellous and so memorable. He came though for us fantastically. What a great champion he is!”
