Brooklyn-born of Honduran heritage Teófimo López who`s ranked fifth by WBC in the lightweight division is visiting Mexico, to ask for the chance to contest and combat the prestigious WBC title.
Accompanied by his father, Teófimo Sr, Junior was forceful in saying that his career as an amateur was very prolific, but nothing will compare with what he will do as a professional. A stunning film backs up his confidence, showing the number five knocking down opponents like ninepins.
Since his debut in 2016, Teófimo has climbed quickly to position himself as a fan favorite, displaying his prodigious KO power. He`s built an unbeaten record of 12 wins, 10 of them by fast track.
The 21-year-old boxer was delighted by the warm reception of the World Boxing Council and seized the moment to ask WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman to consider if he can fight for Green and Gold Laurels this year.
His Father took the microphone not only to reiterate his son’s request but also to publicly say how proud he is of his son’s achievements and that he`s convinced that his son will buckle on the WBC belt in the near future.
Top Rank Vice President of Boxing Operations Carl Moretti said that with champion Mikey Garcia moving up to welterweight to fight Errol Spence, Teo would love to fight for the lightweight belt if it became vacant. But his most important fight will be his next bout on April 20th.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman then suggested that Top Rank hold a tournament in Mexico, with the top Prize being a coveted Top Rank boxer`s contract. With Alacrity Carl replied: “When do we start?!”
