This morning and after some conferences that had to be held virtually due to the restrictions due to the Covid pandemic, finally, the boxing family was able to meet in the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays” to talk about boxing.
The WBC took this opportunity to display the “Teotihuacano Belt”, which was presented last Tuesday via Zoom and will be contested by WBC super-middleweight champion, Saúl Álvarez on November 6 against undefeated champion Caleb Plant.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, explained that the “Teotihuacano Belt” is a masterpiece of art inspired by one of the most emblematic cultures in history and that will be handed to the winner of the fight between the WBC champion, Saúl ” Canelo “Álvarez and Caleb Plant in order to reward and recognize the fights that have transcended in the history of boxing, one of them, the commemorative belt that the organization awards to the fighters who face each other on the two most important dates for Mexico, on May 5 (Battle of Puebla) and September 15 (Independence Day).
He commented that the WBC has worked hard and diligently with Mexican artisans who have transformed the WBC belts into truly great pieces of art, each representing the best of their culture. Today there are 10 commemorative belts: Huichol 1 and 2, Maya 1 and 2, Chiapaneco 1 and 2, Mazahua, Otomí, Mestizo Belt and now the Teotihuacano Belt.
The WBC commemorative belt is inspired by the greatness and majesty of the City of the Gods, Teotihuacán and the power of Quetzalcóatl and is composed of more than 40 pieces of golden obsidian, in the center it has two serpents found head-on, with teeth stop. The shape of Quetzalcóatl is part of the belt with a geometric framework alluding to the plumage that this deity had.
This beautiful belt is a special edition made by “Taller de Obsidiana”, a Mexican design firm that is an expert in maquila and creation of pieces with obsidian with a legacy of three generations, while the elaboration was in the expert charge of Topacio and Gerardo Cuevas Campos, as well as the artisan Gerardo Cuevas Najera.
The Teotihuacano belt represents a symbol of identity and strength of ancient Mexico and is a gift that the World Boxing Council and Mexico gives to the world and is a unique and special trophy that the winner of this long-awaited fight will take home, putting on high the beautiful and vast culture of the State of Mexico.
