The World Boxing Council was part of the second Master Class for Ring Officials given by David Sutherland, Chris Migliore and Mauricio Sulaimán.
The mission of these monthly classes, through the successful WBC University platform, is to promote participation and feedback among ring officials to continue advancing education and boxing.
The topic on this occasion was the study, analysis and discussion of judging criteria.
As part of the session, the panel explained fundamental concepts. The new format of the judges card was studied, which has the mission of unifying criteria qualitatively through the use of the following categories: Closed, Moderate, Decisive, Extremely Decisive (10-8)
False Ideas towards the evaluation of fights were also debunked and the main mistakes made, when evaluating a round were discussed, among them:
A boxer wins the round by having the best moment at the end, taking as a reference the activity of a boxer regarding another round, show more aggressiveness, having more power or being cut…
“We must be concise and simple. We must speak the same language in terms of how we make decisions and not digress. If we use the scoring criteria it will be easy and simple to define why someone wins a round.” said Chris Migliore.
But what are the Basic Criteria to Scoring a Fight?
Effective Aggression: Control, effective blows, be successful in the counterattack and in the exchange of blows.
Scoring Punches: Punches landed in the legal areas.
Effective Aggression: Landing blows, being successful, maintain control, seek to control the environment in the ring.
“You have to be ready, especially in the 4 and 6 round fights. We must always know where we are. Fights are like horse racing and our mission is to score fights through these scoring criteria. Once we have them internalized it is easier to see who is winning a round.” commented David Sutherland.
“What a judge does is evaluate a fight qualitatively and express it with a numerical value.
“A judge must know what they are and what elements he saw for a fighter to win a round. I greatly appreciate the interest of our ring officials. Don’t be afraid to ask. It is from these exercises that we will keep improving. Usain Bolt didn’t just get to run and win medals. He got up early to train, he practiced, he learned from his mistakes. It is the same thing that ring officials must do, have constant training and practice to have an optimal performance”, Mauricio Sulaimán explained.
To conclude this session, WBC University showed us a couple of rounds, which were scored by the attending ring officials, using the Scoring Criteria that were extensively studied during this session.
