Self-esteem refers to the perception and valuation we have of ourselves. It is a combination of how we see ourselves, how we value ourselves, and how we treat ourselves.
A healthy self-esteem allows us to accept and love ourselves, recognizing our strengths accepting our weaknesses and rectifying them via development.
It also influences our ability to set limits, make assertive decisions and maintain healthy relationships. For example: If an athlete is perceived as skilled, intelligent and capable, they will be more confident and will view “obstacles” as challenges and something to overcome A clear example is that boxer who, faced with a “strong rival” or an “elite rival” sees an opportunity to surpass himself and the pending challenge.
If we are given love, acceptance, and recognition for our achievements from childhood, we are more likely to grow up with a positive self-image.
Strong self-esteem provides us with a solid foundation to face life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. It helps us overcome obstacles, learn from mistakes, and persevere toward our personal or sporting goals.
We must believe in ourselves and our abilities. We possess within ourselves everything needed and required to achieve our goals and dreams. Never forget that we are worthy of personal and sporting success, love and happiness.
