WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight champion Claressa Shields (12-0, 2KOs) and WBO champion Savannah Marshall (12-0, 10KOs), will square off in a highly anticipated match for the undisputed 160-pound championship, while, in the main support fight, Alycia Baumgardner, WBC super featherweight champion, faces IBF and WBO champion Mikaela Mayer, Saturday, at The O2 Arena in London.
This Shields vs. Marshall fight generates maximum interest because they have a storied history. The two met in amateur boxing, with Marshall defeating Shields by decision in 2012 at Qinhuangdao, China. Shields went 77-1 as an amateur and is the only female boxer to win undisputed titles in two divisions as a professional.
The World Boxing Council will honour the Memory of Queen Elizabeth II with the Creation of the “Elizabeth II” a special belt that will be awarded to the winner of the Historic Fight: Shields vs Marshall.
This belt was designed with decorum and respect, but at the same time with splendour, according to the majesty of the woman whose name and image it inspired, befitting the significance of her memory and this occasion.
In another tremendous bout, the WBO and IBF super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer, will try to go one step further to become the first undisputed champion of this division, since she will face accomplished WBC champion Alycia Baumgardner, who seeks exactly the same accolade.
The four protagonists of this historic card are already in “The Old Smoke.”
