O’Shaquie Foster will defend his World Boxing Council super featherweight against Eduardo ‘Rocky’ Hernández at the Benito Juárez Sports Center in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Saturday, October 28, which will be broadcast live globally on DAZN.
Foster (20-2 11 KOs) won the Green and Gold Belt in San Antonio, Texas in February by defeating Mexican Rey Vargas to become world champion. The Houston fighter faces a Mexican opponent again in his first defense.
Hernández (34-1, 31 KOs) earned his chance to face Foster thanks to a streak of knockout victories, with his most recent victory over Héctor García last July.
In the 130-pound division there have been absolutely great fighters throughout boxing history. Today we will remember ten of the very best:
1.- Kid Chocolate – The skilled Cuban member of the Hall of Fame defeated great rivals of his time, including Benny Bass and Tony Canzoneri. In each of his performances, he showed his quality and refined style.
2.- Alexis Arguello- After a sizzling streak at 126 pounds, Argüello was even better at 130 pounds, where he defeated Puerto Rican Alfredo Escalera a couple of times. He also defeated Bazooka Limon, Bobby Chacon, Rubén Castillo and Rolando Navarrete.
3.- Floyd Mayweather- One of the divisions in which he stood out the most was at 130 pounds, where he had no rival to give him competition. He defeated the tough intrepid fighter Genaro Hernández, snatching the world crown from him. He subsequently defended the title against Carlos Ríos, Justin Juuko, Carlos Gerena, Goyo Vargas, Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernández and Jesús Chávez.
4.- Flash Elorde – One of the most iconic fighters from the history of boxing in the Philippines. The peak of his career was at 130 pounds, where he defeated Harold Gomes with a great performance and knocked him out in the rematch. Subsequently he made 10 successful defenses until he decided to move up to 135 pounds.
5.- Azumah Nelson – With 15 fights for the super featherweight world title, Nelson was undoubtedly one of the best fighters in the world at that time. He defeated “Azabache” Martinez in his 130-pound debut in 1988, winning the WBC belt. He faced quality champions Juan LaPorte, Jeff Fenech, Jesse James Leija and Gabriel Ruelas.
6.- Manny Pacquiao- After losing to Erik Morales in his 130-pound debut, Pacquiao had a great season in the division. He knocked out Morales in the rematch, defeating Oscar Larios, Jorge Solís and Juan Manuel Márquez.
7.- Genaro Hernández- Besides possessing great qualities as a person, he was a brilliant fighter who was only defeated in this division by Floyd Mayweather. He had 13 world title fights and had a memorable victory over Azumah Nelson.
8. Julio Cesar Chávez- In his brilliant career conquering 3 divisions, at super featherweight Julio had an outstanding campaign, defeating Mario Martínez, Juan LaPorte, Roger Mayweather, Rocky Lockridge, Rubén Castillo, among others.
9.- Bobby Chacón- One of the most complete fighters at 130 pounds, he won the world title in a war against Rafael “Bazooka” Limón. He starred in Fight of the Year against Cornelius Boza-Edwards in 1983.
10.- Erik Morales – An outstandingly sensational fighter who had a great spell in super featherweight division. He conquered the title by defeating Jesús Chávez. He delivered memorable fights with Marco Antonio Barrera and gave Manny Pacquiao a memorable loss in this division.
