Mexican Alexandro “Peque” Santiago conquered the vacant World Boxing Council bantamweight title, defeating Filipino legend Nonito Donaire by unanimous decision in 12 rounds, on Saturday, July 29 at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada , as part of the card starred by Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr.
Santiago dominated much of the fight, had a lot of initiative, and at the end of 12 rounds, he was awarded a deserved unanimous decision by Judges Max DeLuca (115-113), Chris Migliore (116-112) and Steve Weisfeld (116 -112).
Today, as part of our Coffee Tuesday, held in the south of CDMX, at Sports & Chips, the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán, presented Santiago with the belt that lauds him as the WBC bantamweight world champion. Also a wrist mini-belt for everday wearing.
Mauricio Sulaiman
Today we are experiencing the culmination of years of hard work. You have given great satisfaction to many people: Mexico, Tijuana, but, above all, your family.
Congratulations, champ. It is a pride what you represent for boxing and we wish you the best as a world champion. Apart from giving you your world champion belt, we want this mini belt, for your little one, your motivation and your engine. Congratulations, Champion, you are now part of a historic division for Mexican boxing.
Alexandro Santiago
I feel happy, proud and happy, but I know that this is the beginning of an uphill road, because the difficult thing will be to stay as world champion.
Right now I am very motivated, we are going to work very hard to remain champion. Locally, I was known, but fighting on that card put me in the perspective of many fans.
I want to make history, continue writing my legacy, we are going to work very hard. Reign in this historic division and make it big like so many Mexicans.
The tactic was to win round by round. But in the fourth/fifth round, I had more confidence and security in what I was doing. I never demerited my rival, but in those moments I felt that this belt was beckoning and should be mine. Fortunately, the result we wanted was given.
Nonito is a historic champion. A very humble human being, a great person outside of the ring. At the end, he congratulated me: “Very well won. Keep working because you have a great future.” Those words motivate you to keep working hard.
Many thanks for everything. It is a pride to be part of this WBC family. I promise to give my best in every fight and respectfully represent the colors of the WBC.
