On this day in history, Zaragoza prevails in clash of the ages
January 11, 1997
Daniel Zaragoza handed Wayne McCullough his first defeat to defend his super bantamweight title in WBC’s Fight of the Year. Zaragoza, 39, a three-time holder and the division’s oldest, ended the 22-year-old former bantamweight champ’s bid to become a two-weight champion by split decision.
The Mexican retired eight months later after losing to Erik Morales, who also defeated McCullough in his eighth defense of the super bantamweight belt in 1999.
