World Boxing Council female super bantamweight champion, Yamileth Mercado, will defend her title against Zambian Catherine Phiri, who`s the official challenger.
After conquering the crown in November against Fatuma Zarika, Yamileth will make the first defense of her title on March 21 at the Rodrigo M. Quevedo gym in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Yamileth is already preparing with her coach Alfredo Caballero who, in an interview with the Chihuahua newspaper, commented: “Yamileth will not face an easy opponent, because Catherine Phiri is an experienced fighter. However, she will arrive with more experience, more mature, as a result of her last fights and because she has also been working hard in her preparation. She has the desire to go far in this sport ”
“Yeimi” Mercado (15-2, 4 KOs) was crowned after dethroning Fatuma Zarika, by unanimous decision in an entertaining rematch.
