Erickson Lubin and Sebastian Fundora will meet on April 9 at the Virgin Hotels Theater in Las Vegas for the interim World Boxing Council super welterweight title on a card presented by PBC and to be broadcast on SHOWTIME.
The winner between Lubin, 26, and Fundora, 24, will soon have to face the winner of the rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño.
Southpaw Lubin (24-1, 17 KOs), of Orlando, Fla., will be riding a six-fight win streak into the fight with Fundora.
Lubin most recently knocked out former champion Jeison Rosario in the sixth round on June 26 in Atlanta.
The 6 foot – 6 inches Fundora will have the toughest test of his career against Lubin.
The tall southpaw improved his record to 18 wins, without defeat, when he defeated Spaniard Sergio Garcia by unanimous decision in an entertaining elimination bout on December 5 in Los Angeles.
“There are few more compelling matchups in the highly charged junior welterweight division than Erickson Lubin vs. Sebastian Fundora,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions.
“Lubin has shown significant improvement since his first world title fight and can add another impressive victory to his resume on April 9.”
The imposing Fundora has also made a significant mark on the division in his young career, capturing the imagination of fans with his impressive status and aggressive style. With two more 154-pound matchups on the undercard, fans can expect the drama and excitement that this weight class has delivered time and time again over the past few years to continue live on SHOWTIME from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.”
“This is my chance to show the world that I am the best fighter in the division,” Lubin said. “This will separate me from all the contenders I have been beating. I’ve been doing the champion’s job eliminating all contenders, so I have no doubt that I’ll be at the top of the division soon.
“I have a very tall fighter in front of me in Sebastian Fundora, but I know how to make adjustments. We have brought the right sparring partners and prepared exactly how we are supposed to. Everyone should definitely tune in, because it’s ‘Hammer Time’ on SHOWTIME once again.”
For his part, Fundora commented: “We have been working very hard during this camp to be 100% in the battle. We are prepared for any circumstance that may arise and we expect a very professional and well-prepared Lubin on April 9. Our hard work and focus will lead us to victory in this fight.”
