At Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, South Africa, Kevin Lerena (29-2, 14 KOs) earned a twelve-round unanimous decision victory over Ryad Merhy (31-2, 26 KOs) from Belgium to conquer the WBC Bridgerweight Silver title, in a match that was also an eliminatory bout.
Lerena will now have to challenge reigning WBC Bridger champion Lucasz Rozanski for the world title. Rozanksi recently captured the vacant title with a first-round knockout of Alen Babic.
Lerena was cautious and started off slow, but increased his work rate as the rounds progressed in what turned out to be a closely contested bout.
The Judges’ scorecards were 118-110, 115-113 and 116-112.
