The press conference for Chantelle Cameron vs. Katie Taylor 2 took place on Monday in Dublin, Ireland.
The pair previously met in May for one of the biggest fights in boxing this year, with a dominant Chantelle Cameron defending her Super Lightweight Championship belts in a powerful performance in the 3Arena, Dublin.
Now, the two look set to put on one of the biggest rematches of the year on November 25th as Katie Taylor seeks to avenge her only loss as a professional.
Chantelle Cameron’s undisputed WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO Super Lightweight titles are on the line. However, careers and legacies – particularly Katie Taylor’s – may also hang in the balance.
Speaking at the press conference, Katie Taylor emphasised the stakes involved in this contest:
“I’m very well aware that this is a must-win fight and I’m just very grateful to have a chance of a rematch. Not every fighter has this opportunity and so I’m grateful that I have a chance to rectify things and to get things right.”
To have another history making fight and a chance to become a two weight undisputed champion – this is very, very special.
This is the biggest fight of my career.”
Despite the loss, Katie Taylor maintains she is focussed and is putting in the work to course correct her legacy.
“I’ve been here before, not as a pro but at the amateur level where I’ve suffered a defeat and I know how to make the necessary adjustments.
I know how to come back strong.
The resurrection is built into my mindset and it’s in my DNA.
I have no problem being in the trenches. The last fight was a fantastic fight; it was very very close. We have a chance to step in to do it again and I’m very, very confident that if I performed to my best, I will win this fight regardless of who’s on the other side.
I’m expecting the best of Chantelle – an improved Chantelle, and I’m obviously expected to improve as well.
I’m going to have to adjust. I have to make a few improvements, but I believe that I will win this fight and I don’t believe that Chantelle can hurt me either.”
The first fight was a blockbuster event in the Three Arena with 9000 fans, mostly Irish, who created an unforgettable, electric atmosphere. Katie Taylor relishes the prospect of headlining another massive event in her home country: “Every single time we bring big time boxing back to this nation, I think it just embeds boxing back into our culture again where it belongs.
Boxing belongs at the forefront of our sport; It is our most successful sport.
Chantelle Cameron is coming off a strong victory, having beaten – arguably – the greatest female boxer of all time. Despite this, the victory hasn’t gone to her head.
She recognises that the wolf climbing the hill has much more hunger than the one sitting on top of it.
Chantelle described her current mindset: “I can’t be complacent. Katie has a great fire and I know that all she wants is this revenge. I took her first defeat.
(I’m) definitely expecting a better Katie Taylor. I think she needs this win against me so she can also put it to bed.”
Yesterday, Chantelle Cameron displayed a remarkable sense of humility. Instead of revelling in her own achievements, she chosen to meticulously analyze her performance. This approach is an encouraging look for Chantelle, as she prepares to confront a passionate Irish audience of 9,000 celebrating their national hero. Her humility and focus will help her drown out the noise and focus on the job at hand.
She reflected on her performance: “I did make so many mistakes and some bits; I cringe at my own self. I’m making sure that I’m a lot better because I know that I still had more gears.
For me, the first fight was good, but the second fight’s got to be even better.
I’ve got to be spiteful; I’ve got to go back to the old ways where I’m a bit more aggressive.
I think in the first fight I showed too much respect.
I am better when I have a bit of beef between my teeth and I have that spite.
I’ve definitely got that now because I know that I’ve got a massive job on my hands.”
Yet, the most definitive indicator of future abilities is past performance. Chantelle Cameron is showing an appropriate level of confidence because she now knows she can actually beat Katie Taylor:
“I can’t be hurt and I can walk Katie down. I’ve got that confidence and just got to make sure that I do move my head a bit more and I do have that defence at the same time.”
Chantelle Cameron Vs. Katie Taylor 2 is promoted by Matchroom Boxing and will be streaming live and exclusively on DAZN, November 25th.
