José Ramirez digs deep!
Mexican American champion José Ramírez overcame one of the toughest tests of his career against worthy and intrepid contender Jose “Chon” Zepeda, in a great fight.
An admirable and sustained effort in the championship rounds, led Ramírez to victory via a majority decision win, to retain his World Boxing Council super lightweight title for the second time, in front of more than 14,000 fans at the Save Mart Center.
The official cards were 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112. With a supreme effort, Ramírez managed to win the last round on the cards of the three judges,,which proved decisive.
“He was a very strong and intelligent southpaw and he came well prepared,” said Ramírez, adding: “He kept good distance, that made it a tough and close fight, but I think I managed to secure victory in the final rounds. I connected with the most effective shots.”
For his part, Zepeda said: “José Ramírez is a great fighter, and his fans really motivated, giving him momentum.”
As for what follows, Ramírez mentioned his desire to face the best of 140 pounds before moving up to the welterweight division.
