On April 14, 2000, Gustavo “Guty” Espadas Jr won the WBC featherweight championship at the Polifórum Zamná in his native Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, defeating former Philippine world champion Luisito Espinosa.
The contest started with Espinosa hunting the knockout, attacking relentlessly, but in the second round, Espadas took the opportunity to counterattack, sending him crashing to the canvas. It shook up Espinosa, so for the rest of the match he erred on the side of caution, giving the Mexican fighter ample initiative And leeway to dominate.
It ended in a technical decision in round eleven, due to an accidental clash of heads that deeply cut Guty’s left eye, which forced the referee to suspend the match and go to the judges’ score cards.
Marty Denkin saw the fight 107-100, Chuck Hassett 108-99 and John Keane 108-99, all in favor of new WBC featherweight world champion Guty Espadas Jr.
Something relevant to this achievement is that by winning the title, Guty managed to emulate his father by becoming world champion.
Mr. Guty Espadas Cruz became the fly champion on October 2, 1976 by knocking out the then unbeaten Panamanian Alfonso “Piedrita” López Huelva.
This achivement earned Espadas father and son well deserved respective places in the California world boxing hall of fame on October 20, 2018.
