It was a morning full of wonderful, fond memories, anecdotes and above all grateful appreciation for a truly caring and great man, who for more than fifty years in boxing gave everything of himself and his medical expertise, with passion, professionalism and dedication. Dr. Horacio Ramírez Mercado, was for more than three decades the respected, revered and awesome Director of the Medical Services of the Boxing Commission of Mexico City.
Accompanied by his son, his granddaughter and great-grandson, “Doctor Boxeo” received from the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman and the great Spanish champion Javier Castillejos the Green and Gold medal of honor and a commemorative plaque, recognizing his extraordinary brilliant career, focused upon the health and well being of the boxers.
Watching, a so memorable video, the attendees and our beloved honoree remember his vital and wondrous work. A snapshot and a but a flicker, representing a life devoted to boxing medicine. Often using his expertise and decades of experience to intervene and stop fights, therefore and thereby saving the lives of thousands of boxers. An impeccable career of an All Time Great.
Mauricio delved into childhood memories, recalling that first time he accompanied his father to the Coliseum Arena where his love for boxing was kindled:
“I remember that first time in the Colosseum, I was hand in hand with my idol, my dad… I went in and immediately fell in love with boxing and everything that comes with it, a first time that got me so hooked that from then on I was going to all the performances with my dad, where a person was always there who gave me a smile and candy, with his typical greeting: what happened my buddy?, that’s how I remember my dearest doctor Horacio…” commented Mauricio.
For the President of the WBC, this is such a poignant special day to recognize a tremendous man who has dedicated his life and it’s best years, to taking care of boxers and sharing his knowledge with all his colleagues. A legacy of which to be so very proud!
