Undisputed super middleweight champion and superstar Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez will fight Londoner John Ryder, on Saturday, May 6, at the Akron Stadium, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Both fighters were face to face on the dais, at a press conference at the Petco Stadium in San Diego, California, to promote it.
Canelo stressed it would be rash to consider the primary focus is cash, saying: “Sometimes it’s not about the money. Sometimes it is because of pride, and this is the moment. I feel good fighting at home and I feel proud.”
When Alvarez steps into the ring in Guadalajara, Mexico on May 6, he’ll earn about half of what he would have made if the fight took place in Las Vegas, but he says he’s doing it for his home-grown fans.
Canelo (58-2-2 39 KOs) will defend his undisputed crown for the second time after defeating Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy battle last September.
Southpaw Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) is looking to crash Canelo’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, as the popular Londoner who`s The Pride of Islington, has swung into Mexico for the biggest fight of his 12-year career. ‘The Gorilla’ captured the WBO interim title in his last fight, when he stopped Zach Parker in the fourth round.
Top form, riding on the crest of a wave, as Ryder won four straight bouts to earn his place, including a victory over former champion Danny Jacobs. Determined to throw down the gauntlet and a banana skin, he stressed: “I’ve earned it and I think it’s fun. I’m ready to shock the world and get a BIG win.”
The fight, which is promoted by Matchroom Boxing, will be broadcast on DAZN PPV.
