Currently, depression has increased in recent years in teenagers, adults and elders, characterized by persistent periods of sadness and loss of interest in activities, which were previously enjoyed.
It also affects sports in training and even not wanting to know more about the sport or competitions.
It affects the way a person feels, thinks and handles daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, training or working, but how does social media impact our mental health?
Comparison and constant competition: The negative impact generated by other people’s profiles, assuming that they have a “perfect” life, can increase anxiety and constant periods of sadness, causing depression. Reducing the time we spend on social networks reduces thoughts that are not favorable for our mental health. For example: modifying thoughts, “I will never be able to have that body” to “I feel grateful for the body I have and I want to improve,”understanding that each being Human is different and this involves a unique process.
Cyberbullying: These types of actions can be significant sources of stress and depression, especially among adolescents and young adults who are the ones who interact the most, especially on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Studies show that offensive comments in photos, videos and private messages are also a trigger for social isolation and suicidal behavior.
Social networks are a great tool around the world. They can provide a sense of community and support, especially for shy or introverted people, creating change is everyone’s job to be positive agents in the content we share, thus leaving messages to create a less aggressive and friendlier world.
