Immersive Showcase of Boxing Fine Art, Live Music and Performance on Behalf of Humanitarian Initiative Taking Kare of Our Own to Support Retired Champions, Graces the Heart of New York City.
CHAMPIONS – the second of a series of multimedia art experiences, created in support of the legends of the sport of boxing, graced the West Village this holiday season! On Thursday, December 14th, 2023 from 7-8pm there was a private viewing for collectors, press and featured artists; 8-11pm the doors opened to all wishing to be a part of this legendary collaboration between the boxing, fine art, world class music, couture and philanthropic worlds to create a new legacy of how humanity heals through creative expression. This experience was brought to you by Taking Kare of Our Own and Lalonde Manoukian Productions; produced and curated by Anthony Haden Guest, Bailey Lalonde and Mariné Manoukian, hosted by Willard Morgan of Ideal Glass Studios. The most famous artist on exhibit was Keith Haring, amongst 15 multimedia artists and 10 exceptional live musicians from New York, Milan, Hawaii and Paris.
Unlike the first CHAMPIONS show, this one was open to the public; a chance for the people of New York to come together in the holidays for a worthy cause: supporting champions who face health and wealth challenges in retirement, with donations being made to the Jose Sulaiman Retired Boxer’s Fund 501c3. Taking Kare of Our Own was founded by father- daughter duo, former WBC Lightheavyweight World Champion boxer Donny Lalonde and his artist/curator daughter, Bailey to create systems of support for his honourable contemporaries who need help. This experience featured an innovative brain health panel, silent auction, fine art exhibition and a range of live performances of art and music.
Dr Imam Murad Muhammad, the famed promoter for boxing legend Muhammad Ali and many other world champions said of the art show at Gleason Boxing Gym:
“The art show was one of a kind in the history of the boxing world, a unique richness of art that imprints and memorialises the sweat and hard work of many great champion boxers that emerged (from Gleason’s Gym) and represent this great sport. This unique art should create a legacy for time to come and bring new life and remembrance to these now forgotten great fighters.”
Artists Featured: Keith Haring, David MrStarCity White, Bailey Lalonde, Anthony Haden Guest, Keli Lucas, Mike Cockrill, Brandon Tellez, Cosmo Mullican, Layla Love, Linus Coraggio, Trevor Mansfield, Todd Monaghan, Lucas Goly, Mark Andre, Jeaninne Intriago and Mr Idiaz. Live musicians featured were Mariné Manoukian, Dayramir Gonzalez, JoDN, Cornelio Joseph, Jerome David Sloss, Knotty Professor, Malik Hammond, DJCLOCK Julka Kola Kolasínska and special guests. Nearly all exhibited art is for sale.
Taken place at Ideal Glass Studios at 9 W 8th Street in the West Village, this evening went down in New York City’s arts and culture history. Ideal Glass Studios is an artist-run film & TV production studio, founded in 2004 by native New Yorker, actor, and artist, Willard Morgan. The original East Village space, was an independent gallery space and art collective. It was run by a small team of creatives dedicated to fostering a collaborative creative community, and featured rotating mural walls, art exhibitions, film screenings and multidisciplinary performances. In 2017, Morgan opened The Atrium and The Mansion in NYC’s West Village. Here, high-profile film, TV, music, fashion, and art vanguards gather regularly to collaborate. The original space’s DIY vibe lives on in its caring and eccentric team, encouraging creators to present their ideas clearly and express their vision freely. Ideal Glass Studios was, and still is, a place for all to transcend the norm and exist in a space where alternative modes of thought and expression are encouraged and celebrated.
CHAMPIONS is a series of multimedia art and culture experiences fundraising to support the legends of the sport of boxing. Thus far, they have taken place at the legendary Gleason’s Gym in Dumbo and Ideal Glass Studios in the West Village. The who’s who of arts, culture and boxing are coming together to honour this legendary sport and the contributions these athletes have made to culture; working to ensure they can live the best quality of life possible after retirement. This Spring, CHAMPIONS III will be coming to New York City with a lively roster of multidisciplinary artists, Champions of boxing and a brain health panel to discuss innovations and advancements. We would love to see you there!
