Spearheading women`s boxing, Claressa Shields is the first woman to win the 2023 ESPYS award for “Best Boxer”, an award that has been given since 1993.
Beating out and surpassing boxing stars Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson, the ‘GWOAT’ thanked the fans who voted for her for this award and dedicated it to all female boxers. She expressed feeling honored to be the best boxer.
“First I want to thank God. I am truly honored to become the first woman to win the ‘Best Boxer of the Year’ award for ESPYS. This award may have my name on it, but it is for all female boxers who have stepped into the ring and will hopefully inspire future generations of young women to pursue their dreams without limits. I want to thank ESPN and all my fans who voted for me around the world! Winning this award against Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney is an incredible honor.”
Claressa Shields defeated by unanimous decision and took the titles from the then undefeated Ema Kozin and Savannah Marshall to become the undisputed middleweight champion of the world. In June of this year in Detroit, the champion thoroughly dominated Maricela ‘La Diva’ Cornejo.
It should be noted that Shields was also named Female Fighter of the Year 2022 by the Boxing Writers Association of the United States and was already one of three women recognized in the Best Boxer category since 2008.
The undisputed champion in two divisions is 28 years old and has a record of 14 victories, two of them by knockout, without losses.
