Multiple champion Claressa Shields was crowned the new undisputed middleweight champion after defeating Savannah Marshall by unanimous decision on Saturday night in front of a packed O2 arena.
The middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Claressa Shields, managed to become undisputed monarch for the third time at 27 years of age. An historic night for women’s boxing.
A rivalry that has been 10 years in the making, welled up at the opening bell, with the two trading in the centre of the ring. But it was Shields who was more effective, with a series of flashy combinations.
After a fast start from Shields, Marshall came forward in the second and tried to pin Shields on the ropes, but the unified champion used her impressive skills to escape from any situation that could pose significant danger.
As the match progressed, Marshall steadily increased her work rate, while Shields kept her cool and stood his ground, successfully counter punching.
When the final bell rang, both champions received a standing ovation from the sold-out O2 Arena crowd, which witnessed a high-intensity contest between two of the best female boxers in the world.
In this way Claressa Shields was crowned undisputed champion in the middleweight division for the second time with the score of: 96-94, 96-94 and 97-93.
With this victory Claressa also won the “Elizabeth II” belt, a special recognition that the World Boxing Council together with Boxxer Promotions created to honor the Memory of Queen Elizabeth II and women’s boxing.
These are some of Shields’ achievements as a professional and amateur fighter.
